Answer to the question no-8

After the birth of Pakistan, Mohammed Ali Jinnah declared — “Urdu and only Urdu shall be the state language of Pakistan.” As a result, the public brought out a procession from Dhaka University Campus violating section 144. The police shot at the procession and many brave sons like Rafiq, Salam, Barkat, Shafiq, Jabbar lost their lives. Later the UNESCO declared the 21st February as the International Mother Language Day in November, 1999.  Now this immortal 21st February is observed throughout the world showing due respect to our language martyrs.

Dear Sumon,

Hope you are well. I have received your letter just now. I am very glad to know that you are well by the grace of Almighty. In your letter you have asked me to tell you about the history of the International Mother Language Day. Here, it is in short. Our International Mother Language Day has a great history. When Mohammad Ali Jinnah declared Urdu as the state language of Pakistan, the students and all classes of people protested it. The ruling class became furious and imposed section 144 all over the country. But, the students and the public violated section 144 and brought out a procession from Dhaka University campus. The police shot at the procession. As a result, many brave sons like Rafiq, Salam, Barkat, Shafiq, Jabbar received martyrdom. But the Bangalees did not step back. Rather the movement became so strong then that the ruling class was forced to recognize Bangla as one of the state languages of the then Pakistan. Since then the day has been being observed as Shaheed Dibosh. Eventually, it was recognized as the International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO. And it is the history of our Language Day.

No more today. Take care.

Yours ever,

Shaheed
